San Luis trains pilots: an opportunity for mining
The Aeronautical Development Agency (EDA), under the Ministry of Sustainable Productive Development, opened enrollment for young people and adults who want to train as civil aviation pilots. The program is offered at two locations: the hangar at San Luis Airport and Valle del Conlara Airport, both equipped with infrastructure and specialized staff.
The school offers three training tracks. Private Pilot takes a year and a half and 40 flight hours. Commercial Pilot requires 2 to 3 years and 160 flight hours, qualifying graduates to work for airlines and companies in the sector. Flight Instructor takes 4 to 6 years and 300 flight hours, with official certification to train new professionals. The fleet includes three Cessna C152s, two Cessna C172s and one Tecnam P2002.
Requirements include a completed high school education and passing medical exams. The program offers free lodging for students from other regions. "This project cements San Luis as a benchmark in aeronautical training," said EDA director Horacio Antonio Quiroga.
Training with job prospects in strategic sectors
Beyond traditional commercial aviation, this type of training opens doors in industries that are key to the region, such as mining and energy. Both sectors typically operate in remote or hard-to-reach areas, where having trained pilots and aircraft operators is increasingly necessary.
Among the most in-demand applications are personnel and cargo transport to deposits or isolated plants, geological exploration flights, aerial monitoring of power lines, wind farms and solar parks, and inspection of critical infrastructure using aircraft and drones. In addition, many mining operations have their own airstrips or heliports, creating demand for personnel certified in aeronautical regulations and safety.
In this way, the training offered by the EDA is aimed not only at classic commercial aviation, but also positions future pilots from San Luis as a valuable resource for industries undergoing strong growth in the province.
