Lithium from salt flats seeks to transform environmental advantage into commercial value

Lithium produced in salt flats in northwestern Argentina presents a significantly lower carbon footprint than that obtained from spodumene rock processed in furnaces. However, this environmental advantage has not yet systematically translated into price differentiation or a verifiable commercial attribute.

According to the analysis, producing one ton of lithium carbonate through solar evaporation in Jujuy generates between 2 and 4 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. In the case of lithium derived from spodumene rock and processed in China, the estimated range rises to between 15 and 20 tons per ton of product.

The main difficulty lies in the lack of systems capable of certifying, for each commercial unit, freshwater consumption, carbon footprint, and socio-environmental extraction conditions. Without independent, traceable information protected against subsequent modifications, the lower environmental intensity of salt flat lithium cannot fully convert into a market premium.

The European Union Battery Regulation, identified as Regulation 2023/1542, does not establish a direct obligation for Argentine lithium carbonate producers. The requirement falls on battery manufacturers selling their products in the European market, although to comply they must have precise information from their raw material suppliers.

Among the requirements is the Digital Product Passport, mandatory as of February 18, 2027 for electric vehicle batteries and industrial batteries exceeding 2 kilowatt-hours. This record must include carbon footprint calculated under ISO 14067 standard and data on material sourcing.

The scenario presents a challenge that exceeds productive technology. Companies in the South American triangle must advance in measurement, traceability, independent validation, and contractual agreements that allow them to demonstrate their environmental attributes. Otherwise, a potentially significant advantage for salt flat lithium will continue to go unrecognized by buyers.
