Argentina Seeks to Expand Power Grid to Harness Its Energy Resources

Argentina faces a new energy challenge: resource availability is no longer the main constraint, and the bottleneck has shifted to electrical grid capacity. High-voltage transmission infrastructure is insufficient to transport energy to consumption centers and production zones.

A private report noted that the country has gas in Vaca Muerta, copper in San Juan, lithium in the north, as well as wind, solar, and hydroelectric resources. It also holds uranium for its nuclear power plants.

This combination of resources could expand energy supply and support the development of new productive activities. However, the lack of transmission lines and transport capacity prevents a significant portion of that potential from reaching demand centers adequately.

Facing this scenario, the Government presented an electrical transmission expansion plan comprising 16 projects and an estimated investment of $6.6 billion. The scheme envisages private financing participation to advance the projects.

The grid expansion thus emerges as a necessary condition to integrate gas production, minerals, and renewable energies, along with hydroelectric and nuclear generation, into the national electrical system.
