Vaca Muerta Increased Fracturing Activity in August, but Maintained Low Levels

Hydraulic fracturing activity in Vaca Muerta reached 2,262 stages in August, representing a 12.5% increase from the 2,010 operations conducted in July. The result meant 252 additional completions during the month.

Despite the recovery, August was the second-lowest activity period of the year and the second consecutive month below 2,300 stages. The formation had reached its historical peak in June with 2,760 fractures, following six months of sustained growth.

The slowdown was linked to the completion of the gas well campaign and greater caution by operators toward year-end. Of the total registered in August, 86.4% corresponded to oil-focused work and 13.6% to natural gas.

YPF led monthly activity with 998 stages, approximately 44% of the total, followed by Vista Energy with 416, and Tecpetrol with 228. Combined, YPF and Vista accounted for over 62% of operations. Phoenix Global, Shell, and Pluspetrol also participated.

YPF's operations were located in La Amarga Chica, Loma Campana, and Lajas Este. Vista Energy operated in Bajada del Palo Oeste and Bajada del Palo Este, while Tecpetrol concentrated activity in Los Toldos Este 2. Phoenix Global conducted completions in Mata Mora Oeste; Shell in Cruz de Lorena; and Pluspetrol in Bajo del Choique.

Between January and August, Vaca Muerta accumulated 19,230 stages, 17% more than the same period last year and exceeding the 17,814 operations for all of 2024. To reach the industry projection of over 28,000 fractures for the year, the basin would need to sustain an average near 2,190 stages monthly during the final four-month period.
