Overpressure in a pipeline reportedly caused the explosion that left two dead in Añelo

The Public Prosecutor's Office of Neuquén released the initial findings of the investigation into the accident that occurred at the Rincón del Mangrullo deposit, in Añelo, where two oil workers died.

The inspection included a tour of the affected area, interviews with witnesses and individuals linked to the incident, and an assessment of the plant's operations. An analysis of documentation and the protocols applicable to the operation also got underway.

The preliminary report from the fire department placed the incident at the USP 2 Plant, operated by YPF. Two manifolds operate there, sets of pipes, valves and connections designed to distribute and control fluid flow.

According to the leading hypothesis, the incident was caused by a mechanical explosion resulting from overpressure in a pipeline. The evidence under consideration includes the rupture and cracking of a 12-inch pipe belonging to the manifold line on the eastern sector, along with the displacement of components caused by the shock wave. Investigators found no signs of combustion, which preliminarily ruled out a chemical explosion.

The victims were identified as Jonathan David Meliqueo and Cristian Ariel Latorre. Initial autopsy results determined that both died from trauma caused by the explosion.

Prosecutor Eugenia Titanti is handling the case along with legal assistant Luciano Vidal, the fire department, the 10th Police Precinct of Añelo, the Personal Security Department, and officials from the Undersecretariat of Environment. The case file will continue with the review of operational documents and the responsibilities linked to the procedures carried out.
