UK Rejects Milei's Announcements on the Falkland Islands

The Government of the United Kingdom responded to statements by President Javier Milei regarding the Falkland Islands and reiterated that it considers the archipelago to be British. The position was expressed by British officials following the Argentine president's national address.

British Defence Secretary Wes Streeting stated that British sovereignty is grounded in the will of the islanders and characterized the defense of that territory as permanent. He also interpreted Milei's remarks as being primarily linked to internal Argentine politics.

From Downing Street, officials indicated that islanders have the right to develop their natural resources. The British Prime Minister's office added that it is not the first time an Argentine government has issued warnings directed at the inhabitants of the archipelago.

Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband also reaffirmed London's official position. According to his statement, the Falkland Islands will remain British because that is the will of the majority of its inhabitants.

British statements came after Milei announced sanctions against oil companies operating on the islands. The President anticipated that these companies could be barred from working in Argentina and face legal proceedings in absentia.

Additionally, the President announced that the Government will allocate increased resources to the Ministry of Defense through a decree of necessity and urgency to construct a naval base in Tierra del Fuego and expand communications capabilities.
