Milei convenes legislators to align agenda on Falkland Islands, 2027 Budget and electoral reform
President Javier Milei intensified his direct involvement in legislative dynamics and convened a Cabinet meeting this Monday at 10 a.m. at Casa Rosada, followed by an encounter with deputies and senators from La Libertad Avanza at 3 p.m., to coordinate strategy around three key initiatives: the Law for Defense of National Sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, the 2027 Budget, and electoral reform.
At the legislators' meeting, the president will be accompanied by the General Secretary of the Presidency, Karina Milei, and the Chief of Cabinet, Diego Santilli. Legislators expect the president to present on the economic situation and provide details of the libertarian program. Following the meeting at Casa Rosada, deputies will travel to La Libertad Avanza's party headquarters in San Telmo for further discussion.
The Falkland Islands bill
During this day, the Executive will send to the Chamber of Deputies the Falkland Islands bill that contemplates toughened sanctions on various activities, including fishing and hydrocarbon exploitation on the Argentine Continental Shelf. The inclusion of fishing was decided in recent days, despite the existence of the Federal Fishing Law.
Following extensive internal debate, the ruling party decided to postpone sending officials until the bill is discussed in committee. The sanctions initiative and the construction of an Integrated Naval Base in Tierra del Fuego are framed by recent statements from Donald Trump, who called a potential armed conflict between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the islands a "potential disaster" and presented himself as a possible mediator.
Milei had suspended his trip to London, scheduled for mid-October, due to tension generated by Trump's remarks, who admitted being willing to "review" the historic neutral position of the United States. However, at Balcarce 50 they do not rule out a meeting with the Republican president during Milei's visit to New York to participate in the United Nations General Assembly on September 22, an opportunity when he is also expected to mention the claim over the islands in his address to the UN.
2027 Budget and electoral reform
This Tuesday, the libertarian administration has a concentrated agenda. It will send the 2027 Budget to Deputies, to be presented by the economic team without the presence of the president or Economy Minister Luis Caputo. The objectives are to consolidate the fiscal surplus and maintain the priority of appropriations destined for social action.
Simultaneously, the Senate will discuss electoral reform for the first time in the Constitutional Affairs Committee. This is a key initiative that conditions La Libertad Avanza's electoral agreements with governors and allied groups heading toward the 2027 elections. Although the ruling party does not yet have guaranteed votes to advance, its leaders show optimism. "I don't know how we'll unblock it, but we're working on it," admitted a member of the political table seeking to eliminate PASO before December to complicate the scenario for Peronism.
Week's agenda and visit to BahÃa Blanca
The political table will meet this Tuesday at 1 p.m., as it does each week following the presidential spokesman's press conference, Adrián Ravier. At the last meeting, Defense Minister Carlos Presti and Foreign Affairs Minister Pablo Quirno also participated, and they later met with the governor of Tierra del Fuego, Gustavo Melella, to advance construction of the base in Ushuaia.
Toward the end of the week, Milei has scheduled another visit to BahÃa Blanca to see progress on the Mega project under RIGI, accompanied by his younger sister and the coordinating minister. The BahÃa Blanca mayor, Peronist Federico Susbielles, maintains an institutional relationship with Casa Rosada, though recently questioned the ruling party's decision to modify the Cold Zones regime.
With Milei's reelection as the main objective, the ruling party seeks to prevail in Buenos Aires Province, where it projects Diego Santilli's candidacy to challenge governor Axel Kicillof. Given the anticipated electoral calendar, Casa Rosada is working to pass as many bills as possible before Congress becomes conditioned by the 2027 electoral logic.
