Milei Announces Diplomatic and Legal Measures Against Oil Exploitation in Falkland Islands

President Javier Milei delivered a national address to reaffirm Argentina's position on the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands and the defense of natural resources, announcing a series of measures aimed at strengthening state presence and deterring unauthorized extractive operations in occupied territory.

In his address, Milei reiterated that the Falkland Islands are Argentine by right and history, rejecting arguments based on the self-determination of the island population, which he described as implanted. This positioning reflects the continuity of the sovereign claim that transcends governments and remains a matter of state policy.

Response to the Sea Lion project

The president denounced unilateral oil exploitation to be developed in occupied territory through the Sea Lion project. In response, he announced that the Argentine State will deploy diplomatic, economic and legal tools to deter companies involved in these unauthorized extractive operations.

Executive and legislative measures

Among the concrete actions announced, Milei highlighted the signing of a decree to expedite sanctions against extractive companies and the establishment of an integrated naval base in Tierra del Fuego, thereby strengthening state control capacity in the southern region.

The government also proposed the creation of a National Security Council and the promotion of a law to increase penalties against suppliers of unauthorized operations on the islands, tightening the regulatory and sanctioning framework.
