Eramet Highlighted DLE's Impact on Lithium Production

Direct lithium extraction (DLE) has become a fundamental component of Eramet's growth strategy in Argentina. According to Guillermo Simonutti, COO of the company, the technology implemented in the Centenario-Ratones project, located in the Puna region of Salta, has demonstrated its ability to operate at large scale.

At a recent seminar on lithium in South America, Simonutti emphasized that DLE has marked a significant shift in lithium carbonate production. He highlighted that the plant achieved 90% capacity utilization in June, with plans to expand it from 24,000 to 35,000 tonnes annually of LCE.

This technology presents key differences compared to the traditional evaporation process, enabling selective lithium recovery from brine. Simonutti noted that this improved recovery efficiency translates into operational benefits and reduces the need to increase resource extraction.

Eramet plans a $350 million investment to expand the plant, leveraging lessons learned during the initial phase. The company, which opened the plant in 2024, has reported recovery rates exceeding 90% and production times notably shorter compared to the traditional method.

As lithium demand continues to rise, Eramet seeks to consolidate its market position, basing its growth on this innovative extraction technique that promises to make more efficient use of natural resources.
