Level measurement aims to sustain continuity in mining plants

Reliable measurement of material levels in hoppers and intermediate bulk containers plays a central role in maintaining continuity of mining operations. These points function as links between different processing stages, and any deviation can affect production pace.

Hoppers receive solids such as crushed ore, concentrates, and powders, and regulate their transfer to subsequent phases. Material accumulation can generate blockages, restrict flow, and force shutdown of upstream equipment, including crushers and conveyor belts.

Intermediate bulk containers, meanwhile, store reagents used in processes such as flotation and leaching. Insufficient level readings can result in shortages or excessive dosing, impacting recovery rates and process stability.

The environment presents specific challenges for instruments: dust, material buildup, irregular surfaces, dynamic processes, and possible blockages. For this reason, manual inspections or sporadic measurements may not detect in time a condition capable of interrupting operations and, furthermore, increase personnel exposure to risks.

The alternative proposed by Emerson consists of using advanced radar transmitters to obtain continuous, accurate, and automated information on levels. Technology selection should consider the characteristics of each application and enable early response to changes that could compromise solid flow or reagent supply.

With greater visibility over these variables, operators can anticipate deviations, improve process efficiency, and reduce the likelihood of unplanned shutdowns. Level control thus becomes a tool for preserving both productivity and operational safety.
