The role of railway development in supporting mining

Following the recently announced progress in the concession process for Belgrano Cargas, the Argentine Chamber of Mining Companies (CAEM) considers this a relevant milestone for strengthening the logistics infrastructure that mining development will require over the coming decades.

Argentine mining is entering a growth phase, driven largely by the expansion of lithium and copper projects. This scenario will demand increasingly efficient logistics solutions to move large volumes of cargo from production areas to the main processing, storage and export centers.

In this context, rail transport occupies a strategic position. The location of a large share of mining projects in the NOA and Cuyo regions, combined with the long distances separating production centers from ports and destination markets, makes rail a key tool for improving competitiveness, expanding transport capacity and optimizing logistics costs.

For this reason, we highlight the importance of ensuring that future management schemes for the rail network help restore operational capacity, expand available infrastructure and strengthen connectivity between mining regions and logistics and port hubs. Mining competitiveness increasingly depends on robust logistics corridors capable of supporting rising production and exports.

We also view positively the development of mechanisms that encourage long-term investment, regulatory predictability and coordinated participation among operators, concessionaires, investors and cargo shippers in infrastructure projects. Mining can play a significant role in this process by providing sustained cargo volumes over time that help make new investments viable and expand available transport capacity.

The growth of Argentine mining will require a modern, efficient logistics network prepared to support higher production volumes. In this context, rail is a strategic component for developing competitive corridors that connect mining regions with international markets.

Hence the importance of moving forward with alternatives that can boost the capacity of the national rail system and consolidate a more efficient logistics matrix for the country's productive and export development.
