U.S. Ambassador Arrives at AOG Patagonia 2026
Peter Lamelas, embajador de EE.UU en Argentina.

The U.S. Ambassador to Argentina, Peter Lamelas, will attend the Argentina Oil & Gas Patagonia Expo (AOG Patagonia 2026), confirmed Río Negro newspaper after consulting sources linked to the arrangements. The event, considered the leading oil and gas sector fair in the country, will take place between Monday, October 19 and Thursday, October 22 at the Duam venue, located meters from Neuquén airport. The presence of the American diplomatic representative will accompany that of President Javier Milei, who will visit in the afternoon hours during the first day of activities.

Although confirmation of Lamelas's attendance is definitive, the specific schedule of his participation is still being defined. Arrangements point to Tuesday or Wednesday as the most likely days, according to sources linked to the organization. This detail would be known by the end of this week, when diplomatic agenda details are finalized.

First visit since his appointment by the Trump administration

Lamelas's arrival in the north Patagonian region will constitute his first territorial deployment since being appointed by the Donald Trump administration. The decision to participate in AOG Patagonia reveals the importance the American administration assigns to Argentine energy industry and, particularly, to Vaca Muerta's potential in the context of hydrocarbon and lithium supplier diversification at the global level.

However, his arrival occurs in a complex context of bilateral relations at the local level. Approximately two months ago, Lamelas was a central figure in the controversy generated by the agreement between the Water, Light and Power Cooperative (CALF) and Huawei, the Chinese technology multinational. The U.S. Embassy issued an official warning about the possibility of withdrawing visas from the leaders of the Neuquén cooperative that would subscribe to the treaty with the Asian company.

Prior tensions and ongoing negotiations

Although the situation was resolved through a meeting that both parties described as friendly, underlying tensions did not interrupt negotiations between CALF and Huawei. The cooperative, responsible for electricity supply in the provincial capital, continues exploring the incorporation of Chinese technology in the region, reflecting the geopolitical complexities present in local infrastructure decisions with national projections.

Lamelas's participation in AOG Patagonia could be interpreted as a gesture of reaffirming U.S. commitment to Argentine energy industry, beyond specific tensions with local stakeholders.

International delegations and presidential participation

The fair, organized under the leadership of the Argentine Institute of Oil and Gas (IAPG), will convene major operating companies, service providers and logistics companies in the Neuquén Basin. The event will serve as a showcase for projects in unconventional formations, a strategic sector for Argentina in terms of exports and foreign exchange generation.

In addition to the U.S. delegation, representatives from Colombia, Italy, Canada, Brazil, Germany and Switzerland will attend. This multiplicity of international stakeholders underscores the global nature of hydrocarbon business and the geopolitical relevance of Vaca Muerta in energy security strategies of economic powers.

Milei's participation will be brief but symbolic. The president will arrive in a special flight from Buenos Aires, land at the venue adjacent to the airport terminal, participate in the opening ceremony, take a tour of approximately half an hour through the exhibition and return to the capital. His presence seeks to reaffirm the national government's commitment to energy industry during a period when investments in oil and gas compete with lithium projects for fiscal resources and regulatory attention.

Strategic significance of AOG Patagonia 2026

The Neuquén meeting gains additional importance in the current geopolitical scenario. Unconventional hydrocarbon sources gain relevance in supplier diversification strategies globally, particularly following recent tensions in the Middle East and continued sanctions on Russia. Argentina, as a shale gas and oil producer in Vaca Muerta, seeks to position itself as a reliable energy partner for developed markets, especially the European Union and United States.

The presence of both the Argentine president and the U.S. ambassador at the same event demonstrates alignment in strategic priorities, despite specific tensions that emerge in sectoral negotiations or among local stakeholders. AOG Patagonia 2026 will function, in this sense, as a platform to reaffirm commitments and explore new partnerships in a sector that remains fundamental to the national economy.
