Atucha II Achieves WANO's Highest Performance Score

The nuclear power plants Atucha II and Embalse ranked among the best performers in the international industry, according to the results of the PI-Index from the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO). The first achieved 100 points and the second obtained 98.4 out of a maximum of 100.

Atucha II reached the perfect score for the second quarter of 2026, a milestone it attained for the first time since beginning operations in 2014. Embalse, for its part, fell just under two points short of the indicator's maximum score.

The PI-Index enables quarterly comparison of the performance of nuclear power plants operating worldwide. Among the parameters it considers are worker safety, radiation protection, chemical control of systems, equipment reliability, and capacity factor.

Atucha II thus ranked among the plants with the best results from the set of 383 nuclear plants that make up WANO. These indicators add to the performance recorded during 2025, when both units achieved their highest historical levels of annual generation: Atucha II produced 5,408,372 megawatt-hours and Embalse generated 5,352,202 megawatt-hours.

The result also supports Nucleoeléctrica's strategy to expand its participation in international markets through the export of services and technical assistance. The company seeks to offer capabilities in operation, maintenance, engineering, training, and execution of complex projects to nuclear operators in other countries.

Nucleoeléctrica president Juan Martín Campos linked the performance to the technical preparation of the teams and noted that accumulated experience could help generate projects, business partnerships, foreign currency, and skilled employment for Argentina.
