Argentina Challenges UK Guidance on Business and Hydrocarbons in the Falkland Islands

The Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs challenged the official guide released by the United Kingdom to promote business with the Falkland Islands. The British document backs economic activities in the archipelago, including projects linked to hydrocarbon operations.

The Foreign Ministry stated that the United Kingdom seeks to drive commercial and hydrocarbon operations that Argentina considers illegitimate. It also reaffirmed its position that the islands and associated maritime and insular spaces are part of national territory and remain under British occupation.

As part of its strategy against these activities, the Argentine Government reported that it sent approximately 180 warnings to individuals and companies from 30 countries. It also noted that it has 60 ongoing administrative proceedings and has filed three criminal complaints against ten companies and their executives.

The British publication defends the right of the islands' inhabitants to manage their economy and develop their natural resources. It also rejects the increased sanctions promoted by the Javier Milei administration.

The United Kingdom offered assistance to companies facing scrutiny over their operations in the Falkland Islands. The guide recommends these firms seek independent legal advice and suggests that the British Government could intervene with third countries if it believes a company, subsidiary, or supplier was pressured over activities it deems legitimate.
